PBGVs
Their
name reveals much about them: Petit
- small; Basset
- low to the ground; Griffon
- wire coated; and Vendéen
- the area of France in which they originated. In Canada and
the United States, the breed is referred to as "Petit"
or "PB".
PBGVs
maintain that sweet puppy look always, which is what has drawn
many to the breed. They require a minimum amount of grooming
and the disheveled look is to be maintained. A weekly brushing,
nail clipping and ear-cleaning is all that is needed to keep
these little rascals in top form.
Much
of their appeal indeed stems from their "bed head"
looks.
These little bundles of energy are support systems for their
noses and MUST be in a secured area or on
a leash. Otherwise these inquisitive escape artists will follow
their noses just as they were bred to do in the
1600’s in the west (Vendee) of France.
These
scent hounds make great little hunters as they like nothing
better than being in a pack of other dogs/people with their
noses to the ground. PBGVs make phenomenal house pets IF they
think you are the alpha dog and the boss. Being pack animals,
YOU need to be the leader.
Daily
exercise and stimulating toys are recommended to burn off
energy and challenge their intelligance.
